The Role of Affordances at the Semantics/Pragmatics Boundary
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper introduces the concept of affordance within frame semantics as a significant factor in the semantics/pragmatics boundary issue. Specifically, it is argued that expansions of literal meanings, which have been argued to be required for the complete interpretation of sentences, are constrained and guided by affordances, in contrast to the generally assumed complete freedom of the pragmatic mechanisms used to generate the expansions. A first hint at some general properties of affordances are presented, as well as some indications of the significance of affordances.

L2 Learners’ Enhanced Pragmatic Comprehension of Implicatures via Computer-Mediated Communication and Social Media Networks
Second or foreign language (L2) learners’ development of interlanguage pragmatic (ILP) competence to understand and properly interpret utterances under certain social and cultural circumstances plays a pivotal role in the achievement of communicative competence. The current study was designed to explore the effects of synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) and asynchronous com...

There are a lot of increasing evidences to support the strong links between action and language. Action based approach proposed the hierarchical structure of language based on action control and concerned with action goal, context, intention, mirror neurons and object affordances. Action semantics proposed that action control and use of object need not only low-level action control, but also se...
متن کاملFocus: A Case Study on the Semantics/Pragmatics Boundary∗
Philosophers coming to language from the tradition of logical semantics have sometimes been inclined to discount this sort of phenomenon. It makes no difference to the truth conditions of this particular sentence, and may appear merely to be an aspect of the vocal realization of the sentence—of interest to phonologists, and perhaps to socio-linguists, but not of much importance to fundamental p...

Theory of Mind is a comprehensive and general term about the state of intention that determines the quality of a person's social interaction and without it we would not be able to interpret the actions of others. While researchers express the causative role of language in Theory of Mind’s development as a social and fundamental capacity, recent studies have suggested a close link between ...
متن کاملNICHOLAS ASHER and DANIEL BONEVAC FREE CHOICE PERMISSION IS STRONG PERMISSION
Free choice permission, a crucial test case concerning the semantics/ pragmatics boundary, usually receives a pragmatic treatment. But its pragmatic features follow from its semantics. We observe that free choice inferences are defeasible, and defend a semantics of free choice permission as strong permission expressed in terms of a modal conditional in a nonmonotonic logic.
